Buying a Used Kigurumi Mask
A used Kigurumi Mask can cost less and arrive sooner than a new commission. The tradeoff is that its fit, condition, history, and seller need closer inspection before you pay. Don't just hit buy and expect perfection, things are unfortunately a bit more complicated.
Where used masks appear
The usual marketplace depends on region. Xianyu (Goofish) is used in China, Yahoo auctions Japan is as the name implies, and Western sales mostly appear on social platforms or in established community groups rather than on sites like ebay.
A marketplace does not verify that a listing is genuine. Apply the same checks wherever you find it.
Check fit before appearance
Ask for the maker and head size it's intended for. These should be mentioned, if not ask. If they can't provide this information, that's a massive red flag.

Inspect its current condition
If they don't have them, request recent, well-lit photos from the front, sides, back, interior, and underside. Ask specifically about:
- Cracks, warping, paint chips, scratches, or repairs
- Wig tangles, thinning, and note it's current wig condition
- Eyes and the condition they're in, that there isn't unexpected discoloration or damage on them
- Exposure to smoke, pets, or other allergens important to you
“Minor damage” can be difficult to repair when color matching, repainting, or structural work is involved. Minor scratches do happen and generally aren't the worst to deal with, but if it's structural beware.
Verify the seller and listing
Fake listings often reuse a maker's portfolio images or an owner's older social posts. Before paying:
- Reverse-image-search the listing photos
- As mentioned earlier, ask for recent photos of the mask and it's current condition
- Compare the seller's account with the known owner when possible
- Ask questions a real owner should be able to answer about maker, size, condition, and wear
- Use a payment method with buyer protection and understand its claim deadline
