How do I get started with Kigurumi?

What do I need for a Kigurumi costume?
The characteristic pieces are an anime-styled Kigurumi Mask and a Hadatai. Many performers also use body padding or shapewear to adjust proportions, followed by the character's outfit, footwear, and props. The exact layers depend on the character, comfort, and setting.
How much does Kigurumi cost?
Realistically don't expect to pay less than $1000 for a new kigurumi mask and hadatai. Used kigurumi masks can be found cheaper but entry to the hobby is still rather expensive compared to cosplay.
How long does a Kigurumi Mask take to make?
Many commissions take a few months. Ask separately when work is expected to start and how long production should take after it starts. Character complexity, maker backlog, revisions, shipping, and delays all affect the date.
Where can I buy a Kigurumi Mask?

Can I make my own Kigurumi Mask?
Yes, but it is an advanced multidisciplinary prop project. It can require 3D modeling, large-format printing, sanding, painting, eye construction, wig building, fitting, and often multiple iterations on a build. First-time builders should understand those costs and hazards before starting.
Can Kigurumi talk?
Technically yes, but most avoid doing so as to not "ruin the magic" unless absolutely necessary.
Can you eat or drink in a Kigurumi Mask?
Usually not without removing or opening the mask. Plan regular breaks in a private or suitable area so you can cool down, drink, and eat. Do not delay hydration to remain in character.
What does Animegao mean?
Animegao literally means “anime face”, a term invented by a random wikipedia user that for one reason or another found some limited use. The term in some circles became an overseas label for anime-styled Kigurumi Mask cosplay, although it has largely fallen out of use in more recent years.
What's the appeal of kigurumi?
People enjoy Kigurumi for many reasons: bringing a stylized character to life, performing nonverbally, building costumes and props, playing with presentation, separating cosplay from their uncovered appearance, or simply enjoying the enclosed costume experience. No single motivation describes every performer.
Is kigurumi a fetish?
Kigurumi Mask cosplay is not inherently sexual. Many people participate for cosplay, performance, craft, or creative expression. Some adults do however incorporate it into kink or adult content, similar as what happens in other related scenes like cosplay, furry, etc.
How do I clean and store a Kigurumi Mask?

Where can I meet other Kigurumi performers?
Conventions, public social accounts, and introductions through mutual friends are common starting points. Many meetups and photoshoots are private rather than publicly advertised. Introduce yourself respectfully, do not treat a mask purchase as access to a group, and accept that people may not share invitations or personal details.
