Kigurumi Handler Guide

A handler is a trusted person who helps a Kigurumi Mask performer navigate and communicate while in character. A handler is useful in crowds or unfamiliar places, but is not required for every performer or setting. It's akin to how you'd usually see a mascot with someone helping them navigate and communicate while in character.

What a handler does​

A Kigurumi Mask can reduce peripheral vision, and kigs usually tend to remain quiet while in character. Depending on what the performer asks for, a handler can:

  • Point out steps, curbs, obstacles, and approaching people
  • Speak or exchange social details on the performer's behalf
  • Check hair, accessories, Hadatai coverage, and costume alignment
  • Take photos or coordinate with a photographer
  • Carry water, a phone, room key, or repair supplies
  • Track time, heat, and planned breaks
  • Help the performer reach a private place to cool down or unmask

Handling is a shared activity between friends or collaborators, not automatic authority over the performer. It isn't a job either, it should be something you're doing because you want to help a friend.

Before the mask goes on​

If you have never handled before or never had someone handle for you, consider to discuss:

  • Kig name, pronouns, and any public social accounts if relevant. Should they be referred to by the character's name?
  • If there are any concern areas when it comes to vision
  • Whether the kig wants the handler to speak for them
  • If there are any costume parts the handler should know about or keep an eye out for, ie making sure a bow remains well attached because it sometimes goes lopsided
  • Boundaries for touch, photos, and interactions with the public
  • Any specific plans for the outing, ie where to go, what to do, or just wandering around a convention
  • What to do if the pair becomes separated

As a performer its usually smoothest to describe what is ahead if something might catch the kig off guard, and let them move under their own control. Holding hands together also can be a good way of staying together if both parties are comfortable with it.

Clothing and presentation​

Handler clothing can complement a character or photoshoot, completely optional, but can raise the profile of the kig and handler pair. An example could be an idol type character with their handler wearing a suitable "producer" or "manager" outfit.

Or similarly cosplaying a character from the same series as the kig can be another great way of having a great con time together, rather than just being some bub with their kig friend.

This is more of a rarity than the norm, and is mostly just mentioned as food for thought rather than any sort of requirement. Most important should really be that both parties are comfortable and having a good time together.
